Addiction Treatment Resources: Drug & Alcohol Rehab Guide for Havre de Grace, MD

The Benefits of Professional Addiction Treatment

Whether someone is struggling with drugs such as opioids, or alcohol, it’s important to recognize that addiction is a complex disorder. Addiction to any substance affects the chemical structure and functionality of the brain. Addiction also affects psychological and physical health, as well as behavior and lifestyle.

Unfortunately, all too often people with addiction disorders feel like they can stop using drugs or alcohol on their own without professional treatment. The risk of relapse is high in this situation.

Advantages of addiction treatment program :

  •  For addiction to be treated, many issues need to be addressed. The complexity of addiction goes far beyond the desire to stop using drugs or alcohol, and a professional treatment program is the best way to address all of the issues contributing to and surrounding addiction.
  • Professional addiction treatment can help people learn not only how to stop using drugs or alcohol, but how to live healthy lives and develop a support system.
  • Overall the risk of relapse is significantly lower when someone receives professional addiction treatment as opposed to trying to stop using on their own.

While overall professional addiction treatment is the best option for someone battling drugs or alcohol, it can be overwhelming to choose the right program.

Choosing an addiction treatment program

  • Are treatment plans individualized?
  • How will it fit into other areas of your life?
  • Is the staff professional, compassionate and experienced with addiction treatment?
  • Are there continuing services after a treatment program is completed?

Levels of Care for Drug Addiction

Not all drug treatment programs are the same, nor are all the levels of care. While at The Freedom Center we specialize in intensive outpatient programs, we also work with a network of partners who provide all levels of care.

For many people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol, treatment occurs along what’s described as a continuum of care. This means there are different levels of treatment a person may participate in, and they gradually progress through different stages.

Medical Detox

For people with addictions to drug or alcohol, a medically-supervised detox may be the first step. During a medical detox, patients are monitored and kept both safe and comfortable as drugs or alcohol leave their system.

Medical detox is important in a few ways. First, it can lower the risk of relapse. Second, detoxing from certain substances including alcohol can be deadly. With medical care and supervision, the risk of complications is reduced.

Residential/Inpatient Treatment

Whether someone is addicted to drugs or alcohol, there is often a lot of chaos and stress that surrounds them in their daily life. Residential or inpatient treatment can provide a calm, supervised and structured environment that can be beneficial during the early days of treatment.

When someone participates in residential rehab, they will typically begin with a medical detox, and then they will receive an assessment and a treatment plan. Residential rehab can range from short-term which usually lasts around 30 days, or it can be 90 days or longer depending on the person and their needs.

Intensive Outpatient Program

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) is what we offer at the Freedom Center. An intensive outpatient program provides a high level of holistic care and individualized treatment, but participants don’t have to live in the facility. This allows them to be able to go to school or work as normal and to stay in their home environment.

For some people an intensive outpatient program is a starting point, particularly if they’re unable to go to residential rehab for some reason or their addiction is relatively mild. For other people, an intensive outpatient program is a transition after residential rehab.

Support and Recovery Groups—AA, NA and Other 12-Step Programs Near Havre de Grace

Many inpatient and intensive outpatient rehab programs will base group therapy on the 12 steps. Then, once someone completes inpatient or outpatient rehab, they can go to local 12-step meetings in Havre de Grace such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

These groups are a good way to continue building on what’s learned in rehab, and they provide social support and accountability which are critical for long-term addiction recovery.

Substance Addictions That Are Treatable

Addiction to any type of drug or alcohol can be treated, with the right program. Some of the most common addictions we treat at The Freedom Center include:

  • Alcohol
  • Prescription opioids like OxyContin
  • Heroin
  • Cocaine
  • Crack
  • Amphetamines
  • Methamphetamines
  • Benzodiazepines

Often people come to The Freedom Center and they’re addicted to more than one substance at the same time—for example, alcohol and opioids. Multiple addictions are also treatable, with specialized, tailored care.

How Do You Pay for Drug and Alcohol Rehab?

The costs of drug and alcohol rehab can vary significantly. Some factors that play a role in the cost of a  program include the duration, the setting (for example, outpatient rehab is less expensive than inpatient treatment), the amenities and the level of care provided.

An intensive outpatient program at The Freedom Center is going to be significantly less expensive than most residential treatment programs, which is one advantage of this type of treatment.

Many insurance plans will cover some or all of the cost of rehab and addiction treatment. Our team at The Freedom Center can provide you with more information about insurance coverage and paying for rehab, and can also work with your insurance company.

For people who don’t have health insurance, there are flexible payment options available as well.

Ultimately, the costs of not receiving treatment for drug or alcohol addiction can be much higher than the costs of addiction treatment.
