Key Points

  • Maine takes first place being the state that spends the most money on mental health per capita.
  • Alaska is second with the highest number of substance abuse rehabilitation facilities per 100k population.
  • Vermont comes in third, while Montana and Washington D.C are fourth and fifth.

Our review of data collected by SAMSHA revealed that Maine is the state that provides the best substance abuse rehabilitation opportunities.

The study analyzed the number of substance abuse rehabilitation facilities present in every state as of 2023 and the amount spent by each state during the last year toward mental health. The data were then transformed into a score of 10, with 0 being the lowest in the range, to discover which state has the best combination of factors.

Maine takes first place with 10.86 substance abuse rehab facilities per 100,000 population (148 total) and $353.79 per capita spent on mental health. Maine spent $481,988,765 over the last year on mental health for its citizens and has made strides in expanding mental health services, focusing on accessibility and community integration.

Alaska is second with a high score in the number of substance abuse facilities, specifically 11.32 per 100,000 population. and the 4th highest score in dollars spent; this amounts to $308.87 per capita and $226,522,776 in total. Despite its vast and remote geography, Alaska has worked on developing mental health infrastructure to reach its diverse populations.

Third is Vermont, where there are 45 substance abuse rehab facilities as of 2023, which converts to 7 per 100,000 population, and the state has spent $315.67 per capita on mental health. In fact, Vermont, with its progressive approach to healthcare, tends to invest in a comprehensive mental health system.

Further down on the list, Montana takes fourth place with 9.87 substance abuse facilities per 100,000 population and $211.97 spent on mental health per capita. In comparison, Washington D.C. closes the top five with 4.06 facilities per 100,000 people and $318.62 spent per capita.

Nicholas Bellofatto, Director of Admissions for The Freedom Center commented on the findings: “Quality rehabilitation opportunities hinge on a state’s commitment to mental health services, reflected in both facility numbers and financial investment.

As shown by the data, Maine, Alaska, and Vermont have demonstrated such commitment, emphasizing community-based care and holistic approaches. The effectiveness of rehabilitation, however, relies on factors beyond quantity, such as accessibility and integration into the broader mental health system.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Powder cocaine is a hydrochloride salt that’s usually snorted or dissolved and injected.

Crack cocaine is a crystalized form that’s smoked. Crack produces a faster, more intense high, but also wears off quickly, leading to more frequent use. [11]

Both forms are highly addictive, but crack is often associated with a quicker path to dependence due to how rapidly it enters the bloodstream and affects the brain.

Finishing rehab doesn’t mean the journey ends.

At The Freedom Center, the team will help each person develop a personalized recovery plan that lasts. That might include alumni support, sober living connections, and continued therapy.
