Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

What is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)?

A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is a type of substance abuse treatment that caters to those needing a high level of care but a lower intensity than that of a fully inpatient program. It’s less restrictive (and less expensive) than residential rehab but still provides a high level of medical and psychological support. This combination of flexibility and ongoing support is one of the main reasons why PHP is such a popular drug rehab program.

At The Freedom Center, our program is 5-6 days per week, 6 hours per day (the time commitment is comparable to that of a part-time job). Our program involves a combination of behavioral and holistic therapies, wellness education, recreational activities, and a higher level of psychiatric and medical support than outpatient treatment.

The Benefits of a Partial Hospitalization Program

PHP can be used to treat any and all types of substance abuse disorders as well as co-occurring mental illnesses. It is the second highest level of care after inpatient and often the program of choice for those who diagnostically don’t meet the criteria for fully intensive care. However, many of those who have already completed residential treatment choose to continue with a partial hospitalization program because they still need help and the flexibility of partial hospitalization makes it an attractive place to begin addiction treatment.  (Related: What Are The Differences Between PHP & IOP?)

Lower Costs

Clients do not live on-site at the facility. This makes PHP a much more affordable option than traditional inpatient care. It provides a supportive and immersive environment for a fraction of the cost of residential programs, ideal for those whose insurance only provides limited coverage or are paying for rehab fully out of pocket.

Freedom & Flexibility

Clients can choose their own accommodations while still participating in addiction treatment. Whether you opt to stay at nearby sober housing or perhaps commuting from your normal residence, PHP allows for maximum convenience. It also makes it easier to balance treatment with work and family responsibilities.

Supportive Transitioning

Individuals with severe addictions or co-occurring mental disorders (known as dual diagnosis) often require additional psychiatric support after their program is complete. PHP can continue providing medication management and access to additional psychiatric care. However, PHP is an excellent option for anyone who has already been through residential rehab but feels the need for high-level support.
