Laurence Freedom
M.Ed., CACIII, LPC, LAC, MAC
Founder and Director of
The Freedom Center

Laurance Freedom

Since beginning his career in addiction counseling in 1979, Laurence has worked in a variety of substance abuse settings in a variety of roles.  These include outpatient programs for adolescents, adults, and family members; residential programs for adolescents and adults; a state-owned mental health center; self-employed counseling services; and for profit as well as not-for-profit programs.  His roles include addiction counselor, program supervisor, facility administrator, and manager.  In addition, Laurence personally experienced alcohol abuse in his family.  His father died from his alcoholism and Laurence, himself, has been in recovery for 25 years.

It is these experiences that have shaped Laurence's unique, whole person, recovery philosophy that created the foundation for The Freedom Center.  Under Laurence's guidance, The Freedom Center combines the traditional addiction treatment technology with the newest and most effective technology to get superior results (Addiction Treatment).  With this holistic, wellness, treatment technology being pioneered by The Freedom Center, Laurence believes that anyone with the desire to get sober can succeed.

Laurence believes that addiction is a disease of the whole person that will need a whole person solution including the spiritual.  He sees addictions as a gateway that allows all of us to find our roots back to our original Source, and by stepping through this doorway, the promises of peace, happiness, and greater and fuller living are all ours for the taking.  In this way, his addiction has been a gift.  For without it, he would never have found nor been motivated to step through this door.  He now has his freedom, found his true self and Higher Power and is fulfilling part of his life mission through The Freedom Center.

Laurence received a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado and a Masters degree in Counseling and Guidance with a special emphasis in addiction counseling from North Dakota State University.  He is a Licensed Addiction Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor. Laurence is an advanced PSYCH-K practitioner and past president of sacc (Society of Addiction Counselors of Colorado)

Suzan Freedom
BS, MHW, NCN, CAC II
Counselor, Nutritionist, Bodywork
Therapist and Marketing Manager

Suzan Freedom

Suzan is a Colorado native who has spent the majority of her life in the counseling and healing professions.  She grew up in the mountains west of Denver and learned early in life the importance of determination and intention.  She started her own business in 1982 as a counselor and bodywork therapist and has evolved her career by getting advanced trainings as a Certified Nutritionist, an NST practitioner, an advanced PSYCH-K practitioner, and a Certified Addiction Counselor II.

In alignment with The Freedom Center, Suzan's philosophy is that people have the innate ability to heal themselves given the right opportunity and the right support.  That opportunity needs to include caring, loving people and the information necessary to guide and direct their own personal healing.  Suzan believes that all this comes to people when they are ready to undergo such a transformation in their lives.  She, along with The Freedom Center, is ready to support people when they are ready to move forward or get back on track by changing their life.

As Suzan often says, "addiction is not your fault, but it is your responsibility."  As she has done, take responsibility for your life NOW.

Suzan received a B.S. in Mental Health from Metro State College in Denver.  She is a Certified Nutritionist, Certified NST Practitioner and a Certified Addiction Counselor.  She also has advanced training in PSYCH-K.

Edward Ellis
MA, CAC I
Counselor, Instructor

Ed Ellis

In 2003, Ed left a successful teaching and administration career in public education to join The Freedom Center.  Since he had volunteered at the center since 2000, he was able to observe the success of The Freedom Center treatment model.  Impressed at their results, he decided to pursue the additional education required to become a certified addiction counselor, so he could have a greater impact on the lives of their clients.

During Ed's teaching and administration career, he authored innovative educational programs and was highlighted in a PBS special called "For Ourselves and Our Children".  This avocation helped him develop the organizational and communication skills that have made him an asset to The Freedom Center staff.  At The Freedom Center, he teaches IOP classes in methods of recovery, coordinates the Aftercare program and is an individual counselor.  Jefferson County Health and Environment Department has recently hired Ed to take part in a study on Smoking Cessation programs in the North Denver Metro area.  His skills in the addiction field will be further advanced with this opportunity.

Ed says his hope is that he is able to offer his clients the opportunity to see that a lifestyle of recovery is available to all of us and that there are great things in store for us as we approach life clean and sober.

Ed received a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado and is certified as an addiction counselor, and is certified as basic PSYCH-K practitioner.
